Two things make a night coyote hunt legit where I live — a light that works, and a copy of the county rules. Everyone frets about the light. Almost nobody reads the regs. Then a game warden materializes out of the dark at 1 a.m. asking for paperwork, and suddenly the reading part matters.
Nine seasons I’ve been doing this, almost all of it on the county’s east side, where the CRP grass folds down into the creek bottoms. In all that time I’ve been stopped exactly once. Warning only. But we stood there in the cold for a long while, and he schooled me on something I’d been blurring in my head for years: hunting and “predator control” are not the same thing on paper, and the county treats them differently.
That chat stuck with me better than any handout ever could. Below is essentially the conversation I wish somebody had given me before I ever flipped on a light.
One disclaimer, and I mean it: these are the rules in my little corner of the lower Midwest. Yours could look nothing like this. Plenty of states let you hunt coyotes at night all year, no permit, no fuss. Others want private ground plus a landowner’s blessing. A handful barely permit it. So read what follows as a way of thinking about the regs — then go pull up your own county’s code.
First question: whose dirt are you standing on?
Property beats every other variable here. Bag limits, seasons — none of it competes with the question of ownership. Coyotes wander across fence lines without a thought. The law draws much harder lines.
Private land, written permission in hand: night calling is good to go here from January 1 through the end of February. Step outside those dates and daytime coyote hunting stays wide open all year, but anything after dark needs the permit. Public land is a different story entirely. Our two WMAs and the state forest block? Night calling is banned outright. Not limited. Banned.
Guys love to argue that “open for hunting” ought to cover every method imaginable. It doesn’t. I’ve watched two different people try that logic on a warden. Neither version landed well.
Written permission is doing more work than folks give it credit for. Around here, a text message satisfies the requirement. A verbal “sure, have at it” does not — especially not when the guy in green is the one asking. I keep a phone folder stuffed with screenshots of every landowner text. That folder bailed me out once, on a night a landowner’s brother caught me on a fence line and had already decided I was a poacher.
Short version: figure out precisely who owns the ground under your boots, and keep some proof of it.
The illumination rule most people miss
You want light for calling and shooting coyotes at night? Fine. Shine a beam from a vehicle while searching, or rake it from a public road onto somebody else’s ground? Not fine. Don’t carry my county’s line to yours — other places slice this differently — but that truck-versus-boots split is worth digging into no matter where you sit.
